PSA's: What are they and why do you complete them?

Personal Skill Activities (PSA’s) are activities that are patterned after the advancement requirements for Tenderfoot through First Class found in the Boy Scout Handbook.

There are two purposes of the PSA’s. First, it helps a participant to understand what a Scout has to do to find time for advancement along with everything else in his life. Second, it is important that participants understand these skills, as they may be called upon to assist their Troop in approving or teaching these skills with Scouts.

The following guidelines are used:

  • PSA’s are to be worked on in the participant's spare time at home.
  • Completed PSA’s are to be turned in only during the pre-opening period of OKAMA training sessions, or at other times designated by the Librarian.
  • Two types of PSA’s exist: those that are turn-in only, (an example is "Make a camp gadget") and those that are show-and-tell (an example is "Whip the ends of a rope"). An area may be set aside for turn-in only PSA’s and a separate area may be set aside for show and tell PSA’s.
  • Participants must have a 3“ x 5“ card attached to each PSA with their name, Patrol Name and Patrol Signature.
  • All required PSA’s must be completed by the beginning of Session 4 for credit to be received.
  • Participants should be advised that approvals for PSA’s take time, and they should plan to arrive early if they have completed PSA’s to be approved.
  • Questions regarding PSA’s should be directed to the Librarian. The Librarian has the final word in approving PSA’s.
  • When the first PSA for a participant is approved, the participant will be given a PSA card, to be worn on the shirt right pocket, with spaces indicating each PSA. The Staff member approving the PSA will sign off these spaces. Participants must be wearing the card in order for it to be signed. It should be pinned on the uniform with a safety pin that will be provided or a buttonhole slot in the card.
  • Participants must complete four (4) PSA’s in order to graduate from the OKAMA training course and receive a Course Bolo.
  • To earn the OKAMA lapel pin, a participant must complete six (6) PSA’s.
  • Twelve (12) PSA’s will be offered to participants. Only six (6) will be made available at Session 1. The remaining six (6) PSA’s will be made available at Session 2.
