Information for Participants

This information will give participants a better understanding of what is expected of them. Please read this information very carefully; we do not

want any participant to be suprised or upset during the course. If you have any questions, please contact the course director, Steve Smith, at 614-276-9772 or the Scoutmaster, Randy West at 61 or by 4-920-9415

email at Okamatraining@aol.com

Since you will live the Patrol Method, participants will be put into patrols. Each patrol is expected to have a planning meeting between each session, with most if not all of the participants in atendance.

You are also expected to do several Scout skills, called PSA's, that will require some time outside of the course and some tickets, or paperwork items, for each session. There are skills the boys do and paperwork the troop must fill out.

We try to adhere to our schedule as closely as possible. But since this is a participation course, some sessions may run longer than the posted time.

Meals are provided for you during the first 3 sessions. Your patrol will cook as a group for lunch, dinner, and Sunday breakfast of Session #4.

Participants may camp on-site Friday night of both Sessions 3 and 4. This would eliminate the need to get up early and have a long drive to the day's program

at Camp Falling Rock.

Youth Protection and Troop Committee Challange will be offered on Sunday morning of session 3 (October 26, 2008) if there is enough interest. The staff will be asking during Sessions 1 and 2 if you are planning to attend either program. Please see Randy West or Steve Smith if you have any questions about these extra programs or any questions about the main programming.

The  Top  20  Excuses

"Why  I  Can't  Take  Training"

         Time  Constraints

1.    "Scouting already takes too much of my time."

2     "I don't have time right now . . . maybe next year."

3.    "My Troop needs me, I can't take time away from them."

4.    "Four weekends are too much;  why don't you schedule it on week nights."

5.    "Four weekends are too much;  why not condense the essentials to one weekend."

6.    "I can't schedule it;  my job is too unpredictable, or requires Saturday hours."

         No  Need  For  Training

7.    "I just don't see the need to be trained."

8.    "I'm only going to volunteer while my son is in the program."

9.    "I already know the program from years of experience in my Troop."

10.  "I already know the program from years of experience as a Scout."

11.  "I already know the program from reading the Scoutmaster's Handbook."

12.  "I don't know what I could gain by (more) training."

13.  "I've already completed Cub Scout Leader Basic Training;  that should cover all the essentials."

14.  "Other leaders in my Troop are 'Trained';  they keep the program on track,"

         Rumors

15.  "I've heard training is just time for the good old boys to get together and have fun."

16.  "I've heard training is just a bunch of mind games."

17.  "I've heard training is just another meaningless requirement."

         Personal

18.  "All the courses are too far away from where I live."

19.  "I won't know anyone at the course."

20.  "Because . . . 'fill in the blank'."

You are in the Scouting Program because you believe it is important to provide Scouting's values and experiences to your son and to the other Scouts

with whom you come in contact. A Troop's Scouting program based on the aims and methods of the Boy Scouts of America can produce a difference in a

Scout's life that may go beyond the 60 or so years he has left on this earth and continue through his children's lives.

How important is your excuse compared to not being trained to make a difference in one, two or several Scouts' lives? The Bottom Line is that

four weekends, some money and an honest effort on your part seems to be a small price to pay for such a large return.
