This information will give participants a better understanding of what is expected of them. Please read this information very carefully; we do not want any participant to be surprised or upset during the course. If you have any questions, please contact the course director, Steve Smith, at 614-276-9772 or the Scoutmaster, Randy West, at 614-920-9415 or by email at Okamatraining@aol.com Since you will live the Patrol Method, participants will be put into patrols. Each patrol will need a name, call, cheer or yell, song, table totem, signature and flag. Patrol Names will start out as a noun (Wolf, Raven, Hawk, Panther, or Buffalo) and should have one or more adjectives added. These patrol names are used each year, but each Patrol is special and it deserves special descriptive words in its name. The SPL must approve of the final name used for each patrol. The objects you make need not be elaborate. The flag can be very simple but must contain the full name of the patrol, the patrol symbol, the word "Okama", the course number and the names of the patrol members. You will need to elect a Patrol Leader at Session 1 and have him assign the other offices of a patrol. You will also have some time to discuss the patrol items mentioned above. Each patrol is expected to have a planning meeting between each session, with most, if not all, of the participants in attendance. Electing a new Patrol Leader, assigning new offices, finishing your patrol items and planning for the next session are some of the items to be completed at the interim meetings. You are also expected to do several Scout skills, called PSA's, that will require some time outside of the course. Various tickets, also known as paperwork, will be due at the beginning of each session. The PSA's are skills the boys learn and the tickets are paperwork that the troop needs to do in order to function. We try to adhere to our schedule as closely as possible. But since this is a participation course, some sessions may run longer than the posted time, such as the Session 3 campfire. Meals are provided for you during the first 3 sessions. Your patrol will cook as a group for lunch, dinner, and Sunday breakfast of Session #4. Participants may camp on-site Friday night of both Sessions 3 and 4. This would eliminate the need to get up early and have a long drive to the day's program at Camp Falling Rock. Youth Protection and Troop Committee Challenge will be offered on Sunday morning of session 3 (October 11, 2009) if there is enough interest. The staff will be asking during Sessions 1 and 2 if you are planning to attend either program. Please see Randy West or Steve Smith if you have any questions about these extra programs.
